Sores. Pus. Faeces. Are there three less appetizing words in the English language? However it turns out that bodily functions can, in fact, be absolutely delicious, as Eat Your Heart out – a bake sale with a difference – proved this weekend. The event saw many expert cake crafters and mixologists come together to sell sweet treats of the anatomical variety. Syphilitic cupcakes, internal organ macaroons and chocolate skulls – this was more Mary Shelley than Mary Berry. This year’s Eat Your Heart Out was a much bigger affair than its first incarnation back in 2010 and the Pathology Museum at St Bart’s Hospital was a deliciously macabre choice of venue – there’s something strangely enjoyable about perusing various pickled Victorian body parts while bopping along to Elvis and sipping on a urine sample cocktail.
There were plenty of educational talks throughout the weekend too, which highlighted many of the themes which inspired the bakers. I caught a particularly interesting talk from an assistant pathology technician, Zoe Rutherford, who gleefully explained about eviscerating organs and reconstructing smashed skills, along with many other informative facts about working in an NHS morgue.
After purchasing a faecal sample, which was actually a very tasty chocolate and almond fudge, I made my way home, being careful to conceal its alarmingly realistic appearance from my fellow train passengers…

On Sunday night, Rufus Wainwright premiered his musical arrangement of five Shakespearean sonnets at the Barbican in London. Rufus, who seems to find great inspiration in Shakespeare’s poetry, has already arranged three sonnets on his 2010 album All My Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, plus a version of the much debated Sonnet 20. Accompanied by the BBC Symphonic orchestra and actress Sian Phillips providing a reading of each sonnet, it was a suitably grandiose evening.

Veronese coffee cup and saucer – Royal Crown Derby
The Guardian ran a great feature this week on home wares inspired by The Great Gatsby. What with The Artist proving such a surprise box office hit, I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of this art deco style in the build up to Baz Luhrmann’s 3D version of F Scott Fitzgerald’s account of the Jazz Age.
Being skeptical of anything 3D, I’m reserving judgement until I’ve at least seen a trailer, but needless to say with Luhrmann in the director’s chair, the very least we can expect is some opulent art direction and it will be rather pleasing to see some vintage style which favors simple glamour over the current obsession with chintz.

As part of Jeremy Deller’s residency at the Hayward, the Turner prize-winning artist invited music journalist, Alexis Petridis, pop scholar Jon Savage and Manic Street Preachers’ bassist Nicky Wire to talk about the way in which gay culture has influenced the development of mainstream pop and rock.
The title of the talk, All Rock and Roll is Homosexual, refers to a t-shirt slogan used by the Manic Street Preachers around the time of the release of their debut album, Generation Terrorists. It seems incredible now to think that this was a t-shirt sold at Bon Jovi gigs when the Manics supported them, but nonetheless appropriate when you think about Bon Jovi’s image back in the 80’s and 90’s – a painfully heterosexual band who enjoyed parading around on stage in tight trousers and obscenely big hair. That’s the beauty of the statement though- all rock and roll is homosexual- even if you’re blissfully unaware of it.
The Manics have always been a band who have always embraced queer culture- from wearing their mum’s blouses on Top of the Pops to the sexy posturing in their video for You Love Us. Much of the talk focused on the use of homosexuality, or more accurately, homoeroticism to provoke a reaction- something the name Nicky Wire is almost synonymous with.
It was thoroughly interesting to listen to three people who have such a long and rich experience in the world of pop talk about a subject they obviously felt a great fondness for. Peppered with anecdotes (a favourite of my including Savage describing a member of a certain 80’s pop duo as a “rancid old queen.” An insult I shall be adopting forthwith.), the speakers were more focused on how popular music was once an arena to push the boundaries of performance through sexuality, as opposed to an exploration of gender politics, although they did touch on how rock music was a way of displaying and appreciating male beauty and fragility.
Deller drew the evening to a close by showing part of a video filmed in 1984 entitled “The Height of Goth”. Shot at a Yorkshire club called Xclusiv, the section we saw showed clubbers dancing, or rather, performing to Bowie’s Life on Mars? A wonderful illustration of how music gives us an opportunity to dabble in something flamboyant.
